What is Traditional Chinese Acupuncture?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture supports a wide range of health conditions by enhancing the body’s natural ability to restore balance.

TCM views the body through a “wellness” lens, identifying areas of suboptimal function in both the body and lifestyle. Treatment aims to restore health in these areas, helping to resolve the issues that bring people to seek care.

Diagnosis in Chinese Medicine is guided by the Eight Principles Theory and Meridian Theory. During the initial visit, your practitioner will ask detailed questions and assess key indicators—such as your tongue, pulse, and physical symptoms—to understand where imbalances may exist.

The Eight Principles framework explores:

Is the condition “hot” or “cold” in nature?

Does it affect the “interior” or “exterior” of the body?

Is there a “deficiency” of vital energy or an “excess”

of accumulated energy in the organs or meridians?

Is the imbalance more “Yin” or “Yang” in nature?

To assess the meridian system and internal organ

function, Xinyi may ask about:

  • Digestion

  • Sleep quality

  • Diet and appetite

  • Mood and mental health

  • Lifestyle habits

  • Respiratory issues

  • Skin conditions

  • Pain and discomfort

  • Sensory functions (vision, hearing, smell, taste)

  • Reproductive and women’s health

  • Urinary and genitourinary health

  • Medications and Western medical diagnoses

Through this comprehensive understanding, traditional Chinese acupuncture aims to address not only symptoms but also the underlying root causes, supporting your body’s return to balance and well-being.
