What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that involves burning a herb called mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) near or on specific acupuncture points. The warmth from the burning herb helps stimulate circulation, dispel cold and dampness, and boost the body’s natural healing energy.
There are two common forms:
-
Direct moxa: A small cone of moxa is placed on the skin or on an insulating medium like ginger or salt.
-
Indirect moxa: A moxa stick (similar to a cigar) is lit and held above the skin to gently warm specific areas without touching. We also use the moxa box. A moxa box is a special tool used during moxibustion therapy to safely and evenly apply the warmth of burning mugwort to a larger area of the body — such as the lower back, abdomen, or joints. The box holds lit moxa over acupuncture points without touching the skin, creating a cozy, penetrating warmth that supports healing and relaxation.
Moxibustion is commonly used for:
-
Cold hands and feet
-
Menstrual pain or irregular periods
-
Breech baby position in late pregnancy
-
Digestive weakness or fatigue
-
Joint pain, stiffness, or arthritis
-
Immune system support
The therapy is gentle, deeply relaxing, and often used alongside acupuncture for enhanced results. At The Needle Lady, we use high-quality, smokeless moxa when needed to create a comfortable experience without heavy smoke or odor.
