What is cosmetic acupuncture, and how does it work?

Cosmetic acupuncture (also known as facial acupuncture) is a holistic treatment that uses ultra-fine needles to create tiny, controlled microtraumas in the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural healing response, increases blood flow, and triggers the production of collagen —

the protein responsible for firm, smooth skin.

Because the results come from your own body, the process is 100% natural. It’s not about injecting substances — it’s about waking up what’s already inside you.

What led me to cosmetic acupuncture?

Hi, I’m Xinyi Yuan, a registered acupuncturist, Chinese herbalist.

I was first drawn to cosmetic acupuncture in Queenstown while exploring natural approaches to support women during postpartum recovery and menopause. The more I learned, the more I fell in love with its gentle yet powerful effects — not just on the skin, but on confidence and well-being too.

In a world filled with quick fixes and chemicals, I knew there had to be many people like me looking for a more natural, grounded approach to skincare — something that doesn’t mask beauty, but brings it to life from within.

Key benefits of cosmetic acupuncture:

✅ 100% natural and chemical-free

💆‍♀️ Softens fine lines and wrinkles

🌟 Brightens dull or tired skin

🧴 Evens out skin tone and texture

💧 Helps clear acne and reduce scarring

👄 Enhances jawline, firms neck, and reduces puffiness

🪷 Promotes overall relaxation and well-being

Many of my clients say their skin looks fresher and more radiant after just a few sessions — and they feel better, too.

Does it hurt?

It’s completely natural to feel a little nervous about needles, especially if it’s your first time. But rest assured — the needles I use for cosmetic acupuncture are exceptionally fine, just 0.14mm in thickness. That’s about seven times thinner than a sewing needle, and over 150 times thinner than a medical syringe.

You may feel a slight prick with one or two of the needles, but most of them go in so gently that clients often don’t feel anything at all.

In fact, many people find the session so relaxing they drift off to sleep!

My priority is always to make you feel comfortable, safe, and relaxed throughout your treatment.

Important things to know before your appointment:

  • Please eat something before your session — acupuncture can be quite stimulating, and we don’t want you feeling faint.

  • If you're planning for a special event, allow at least 5 days in advance in case of any minor bruising (rare, but possible).

  • After your session, avoid touching up makeup for at least 4 hours.

  • You can have cosmetic acupuncture before Botox, but please wait 4 weeks after Botox if you want treatment in that same area.

  • Cosmetic acupuncture can also be helpful after facial surgery, as it supports healing and tissue regeneration.

How many sessions will I need?

Acupuncture works cumulatively — the more consistent you are, the more visible and lasting the results. I usually recommend 1–2 sessions per week for the first few weeks, followed by monthly maintenance.

That said, each plan is tailored to your individual skin type, health condition, and goals. We’ll always work together to create something that feels right for you.
